The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.
