Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
