The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
